You Need to Read These Books If You Are a Women’s Rights Activist

There is no denying that many people take pride in being a women’s rights activist. I personally feel proud of being one, because it is high time that the society understands that women are equal to men in every walk of life, and they deserve the same rights as their male counterparts. As compared to the older days, women rights are slowly emerging, and allowing women to truly feel empowered, however, there is still a long way to go.

If you are just starting your journey as a women’s rights activist, then there are a handful of amazing books that you should definitely read. This will allow you to stay up to date with all the proper information, and you will be able to truly embrace the concept of women empowerment.

A Room of One’s Own – Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf is known as one of the best authors of all time, and while she is notably known for her novels, A Room of One’s Own is one of her finest feminist criticism she has ever written. Despite being almost a century old, it still remains one of the most relevant books of all time.

Ain’t I a Woman – Bell Hooks

If you take a look back at the history, you wil lrealise how black women have been removed from mainstream narrative of feminism. Bell Hooks perfectly talks about how sexism and racism has affected the black American women for a long, long time. It is the perfect feminist book people need to read.

The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women – Naomi Wolf

If, as a woman, there have been times where someone or something pressured you into looking in a certain way, then this book is for you. The book talks about the messages that were projected on women by the media back in the 90s.

In Our Time: Memoir of a Revolution – Susan Brownmiller

While Susan Brownmiller was a feature journalist, she had no idea how opening up about her past issues like abortion as well as discrimination would change the course of her life. She later went on to write In Our Time: Memoir of a Revolution, a book with some of the finest and thrilling anecdotes that took the women empowerment one step further.

I Am Malala – Malala Yousafzai

I don’t think Malala Yousafzai needs any introduction; at the age of 11, she stood up against the Taliban regime in the area of Pakistan she was living, and she also talked how girls should have the rights to education. However, she was shot in the end in 2012 by a Taliban insurgent, but survived the gunshot, and went on to become one of the modern day beacon for girls all around the Pakistan as well as the world. She received a Nobel peace prize at the age of 17. Her book I Am Malala features Malala talking about her story, as well as her life, in her own words.

While German Laws Are There For Women, German Culture is Not

When you take a look at the countries with some of the best women’s rights, you will see Germany in the list, almost always. A country in which women’s rights can be found deep in the constitution, and women of the country enjoy a lot of amenities such as legal protection, family leaves, and proper jobs, there is no denying that when it comes to providing women the rights, Germany is doing a lot. Angela Merkel, who has been the chancellor of Germany since 2005 is undeniably one of the most powerful women in the world.

Despite the fact that the German laws are all about women empowerment, it seems like that the German culture is not. Despite the #metoo movement taking a toll, and being responsible for the downfall of so many famous public figures including celebrities, it seems like the sexual misconduct, and harassment is not something that happens to be the major topic that is being discussed in the Germany.

While Merkel has done a lot to increase the profile of women in Germany, she does not like being called a feminist at all. As it seems, there has been absolutely nothing related to the #metoo movement in Germany as there has been in other countries on the same scale. It is strange, because Germany, as a country, is all about women’s rights, so it is hard to understand why there is nothing going on in the country. Aside from Dieter Wedel who is being investigated for predatory behavior, no politician, corporate moguls, or celebrities have been targeted and exposed by harassment charges against them.

Many have a theory that after living with the guilt of Nazi terror for years, the German society is simply not ready to grasp onto another class of victims. Many even say that not many women in Germany want to come out and talk about how they have been the victim, but the only reason they do not do that is because they will not be getting much sympathy.

According to official statements, many believe that the debate surrounding harassment simply does not resonate in Germany. They even talk about how women in Germany have more important concerns. According to a poll in November, a research found out that only 1 percent of German women talk about how the #metoo debate is relevant to their lives. However, it does not mean that the harassment does not effect in Germany. It exists, but it is not enough to have someone take action against the culprits.

This is one of the strangest phenomena that many people have seen in the history of the world. Despite the #metoo movement reaching new heights, many people are still not sure why Germany is lagging behind the whole movement. Is it because there is no harassment in the country? If that is so, then why every now and then we read about it on the internet. It is hard to say.

How You Can Help Improve Women’s Rights

In the modern day and age, it is safe to say that women’s rights are slowly increasing, and getting better and better. This is something that has been long overdue as we need to accept that women deserve the equal spot in the society as compared to the male counterparts. Still, several of the countries are still grasping the concept of women’s rights, and trying to make them better, and more prominent.

Whatever the case might be, we need to understand that there is still a lot to be done, and we can’t just ignore that. As a matter off act, there are a lot of things we can do to help improve the women’s right. Yes, we, as responsible citizens, can do a lot to improve women’s rights. Want to know how? That is what we are going to look at.

Speak Up

Sure, speaking up and raising your voice is something that has been considered a rebellious act for a long, long time, but it is necessary to understand that you are going to be doing it for a cause that is good.  Your voice will amplify, and will be able to change the course of a conversation.

Be Supportive

Another way you could be helpful towards women’s rights is by being supportive of one and the other. This is something many people need to start understanding as the support can bring forward a new movement.

Share The Work

If you want to make a positive impact, you need to start sharing the workload with others who are engaged in the same activities.

Be More Involved

You can’t consider yourself a member of a society or a movement unless or until you actually do something positive to bring a change. If you want to promote women’s rights, and make a difference, then simply be more involved and I can assure you that the change will come.

Share Your Knowledge With Others

Why should the knowledge of women’s rights remain within the current society members? Instead of doing that, go ahead and start sharing your knowledge with others; inform them about what the movement is all about, especially the younger generation.

Be Aware of Your Rights

If you are trying to speak up for women’s rights, the first thing you need to do is being aware of your own rights. Simply put, human rights are women’s rights, and vice versa. So, keep the human rights in mind, and you will have an easier time understanding and promoting women’s rights.

Contribute On The Internet

Internet is the type of weapon that you can use for a lot of good reasons. If you are a part of the global village, then don’t hesitate in joining the online forums, and promoting the cause as well as what you believe in.

Give to The Community

It is appreciated that you are standing up for something you believe in but take active part in all the rallies as well as the conferences. Give to the community.
